Given socialites’ penchant for self-promotion, there is no lack of information on the Internet about their like and dislikes, their friends and enemies, and their pet cosmetic procedures. In a previous post, I recommended the perhaps overly diplomatic website newyorksocialdiary.com, but it’s also fun to visit sites like cityfile.com that approach their subjects with a slightly snarkier tone. Would you like an example? How about this description of the ubiquitous Muffie Potter Aston:
Who – A staple at benefits around town, Muffie Potter Aston is the wife of Dr. Sherrell Aston, the Upper East Side plastic surgeon who handles nips and tucks for the social set.
Backstory – A Washington D.C. native, Muffie headed up the public relations department at Van Cleef & Arpels before she settled into the famed plastic surgeon’s Park Avenue apartment. Muffie doesn’t concern herself with a day job these days. When she isn’t under the knife herself, she devotes her time and attention to various charitable causes close to her heart, such as the American Ballet Theatre, Memorial Sloan-Kettering, and UNICEF.
AKA – As you’ve probably suspected, her birth certificate doesn’t list her as Muffie. Her real first name is Miriam.
In person – Muffie is hard to miss: Her sky-high hairline and weirdly recessed forehead make her a dead ringer for a blond Klingon. She’s also obsessed with maintaining her trim figure. “I am religious about what I eat,” she told Town & Country in 2003. “I start the day with a bowl of sliced cantaloupe, three apricots, and three prunes; then I go to the gym. Being three pounds overweight drives me to distraction.”
Personal – Dr. Aston is Muffie’s second husband (and Muffie is Dr. Aston’s second wife). The couple have twin daughters—Bracie Potter Aston and Ashleigh Tatiana Aston—but Muffie didn’t have to worry about losing her pregnancy weight after their birth: The girls were born to a surrogate in 2005 (she also has three step-children). The Astons live on Park Avenue, in the same building as former MoMA chief Agnes Gund and former Morgan Stanley exec Zoe Cruz, and spend weekends at their home in Locust Valley.
